Healthy Eating

The benefits of a healthy balanced diet go well beyond aspects of weight management. Mental and physical performance is also reliant on a sensible approach to what and when we eat. The body and brain function optimally when there is a regular, but not excessive supply of fuels entering the body. This means eating every 4-5 hours to keep up blood glucose levels and control your appetite and metabolism.

So, what is a healthy diet?  Basically, it involves meeting the dietary guidelines and recommendations for all nutrients. Having a consistent structure to your day, and making a few small changes to some food choices you make can have a positive impact. For example, it has been shown in children that skipping breakfast results in poorer work performance and concentration during the morning at school, why should an adult be any different? Creating big gaps between eating occasions in the middle of the day generally results in a drop in lag time in the afternoon and catch up eating at night, which increases the risk of weight gain amongst other factors. Letting yourself get too hungry leads to eating too quickly and therefore not allowing time to sense when you’ve eaten enough, until after you’ve done so.

Since changing eating behaviours is such a personal decision we do not recommend a specific diet to follow. Instead, the aim is to challenge you to be honest with yourself and give you a range of ideas that you can follow up on whether they are content i.e. what and how much you eat, or structural i.e. how and when you eat. Each of us has different strengths and weaknesses, and this is also true with the way we eat and what we eat. We realise that old habits die hard but it takes a conscious decision to even start that process, and that requires a realisation regarding what habits may need to be changed. Making a decision to change only 1 or 2 habits can have a substantial impact on your performance, and subsequently on your health.

Modifying your eating habits can directly impact your performance.
