Government Research reveals Cost of Stress

The Australian Government department Comcare, conducted extensive research into the incidence and cost of psychological injury [stress] for the period 2003-2004. The results have been released and they are quite startling.

• In 2003-2004, Australian Government claims for psychological injury accounted for 7% of total
workers’ compensation claims, though nearly 27% of claim costs.

• It is forecast that claims for psychological injury in Australian Government agencies will increase by
38% in 2004-05. The lifetime cost of each psychological injury claim during 2004-05 is forecast to
cost on average $110,000 compared to around $15,000 for non-stress related claims.

• Employers can influence this loss in productivity through a focus on preventative and early
rehabilitation assistance.
