| Are You Generous This article appeared in the Courier Mail on Saturday 6th December 2008
Generosity comes in many different forms. It can be from companies, managers, supervisors or individuals and would normally represent the gratitude of the giver towards the recipient as recognition for outstanding performance. There is a value placed upon this generosity by both parties and more often than not it is given and received with thanks.
One of the more important applications of generosity is from a manager or supervisor to one of their staff. This recognition is normally well received and serves to heighten the relationship between the employee and the manager or company.
There is a concern however if the generosity of the giver does not match the perceived value expected by the recipient. This can lead to ill feelings, resentment and apathy as the recipient feels the recognition does not match their effort.
Concerns can also arise if the giver is generous on a regular basis. This leads to employee expectations of constant recognition through generosity and a lack of respect for the giver if it does not continue or becomes common place.
Generosity does not always have to be with money or gifts. In fact, one of the more generous and considerate things a manager or supervisor can do is to give their time and listen to their staff when they have concerns. Giving them the time they need to discuss or work through any difficulties they have is providing an extremely important hidden value. Time is a valuable commodity. Listening is a valuable commodity. Taking action or following through on these discussions where necessary is a must if you want to maintain and continually build support and respect.
People will always place a high value on the time provided by another when it is given openly and generously.
